Sometimes on the battlefield we meet NPCs who entrust us with optional tasks, for the completion of which we are rewarded with experience points and valuable items. Escorting NPCs and defending specific points on the map are much less frequent, instead the authors propose “rest” in the form of simple puzzles with switching mechanisms, stealth tasks (they are not irritating as in Gravity Rush 2) or searching for a character / item. And although the Dynasty Warriors formula used here has many limitations, the developer managed to relatively diversify the mandatory missions. As in the “one”, we can shorten our time during the next trips by teleporting to selected places with the help of blue crystals, which must first be found and activated. Only after a few minutes of sprint (yes, in the sequel the character can run) we reach smaller map sections, where we are waiting for the main plot tasks, written here for about thirty hours of fun.
The levels are relatively wide, full of secret passages, enemies, NPCs in trouble or treasures, and in addition they are very thematically diverse (deserts, forests, meadows, mountains, etc.). So we have a large HUB in the form of a town from which we can go in several directions. On the occasion of the “two”, the creators decided to delve deeper into the jRPG heritage of the series, constructing the game world on a similar principle as in the main installments of the series.
From the map level, we selected skirmishes, and then landed at hotspots, killing all monsters or escorting an NPC or defending specific objects. The pattern of play in the predecessor was very simple. The owners of the save games from “one” and DQ Builders can additionally count on small bonuses, such as Luceus and Aurora costumes, Dragon Quest costumes or the hammer that was held by the hero / heroine in Builders. In order not to spoil anyone’s surprises, I will only mention that the playable characters are Angelo, Carver, Gabo and Maribel. The authors did not take the easy way, transferring only a few characters from the first Heroes, incl.
I saved the seven kingdoms as pink-haired Michalina, but fans of the series are more interested in guest appearances of cult characters from the canonical episodes of the series. Before we watch the prologue, we need to decide which character will be the lead character – Lazarel or Teresa – and then give her a name. It is a simple, funny story about friendship and joint effort in the fight for a better tomorrow, more complex and interesting than in the previous installment. Sounds familiar? Japanese screenwriters have undoubtedly read Game of Thrones, except that in the colorful world of Akira Toriyama you will not see gushing blood, s*x scenes, or sexual deviants. Quite coincidentally, Teresa and her cousin Lazarel are at the center of the events, who team up with the heroes of the numbered installments of Dragon Quest to learn the identity of the king’s killer and prevent the conflict from escalating. One day, the king of one of the countries is murdered, and as a result he begins a great conflict foretold in prophecy. Here, the continent is divided into seven kingdoms that have coexisted in peace for over a thousand years. The action of the “two” takes place in a different version of the DQ world than the original. Dragon Quest Heroes II came to us with almost a year of delay, but it was worth waiting for, as this production is better than the original in every respect. The direct sequel was released in Japan in May 2016, so less than a year and a half after the original debuted. DQ Heroes was even better for them – it was probably the only “out of seven” title I spent so much time with on PlayStation 4. The experiment had previously been successful in Hyrule Warriors on Wii U, a title inspired by The Legend of Zelda.
The idea was simple – we create a game similar to Dynasty / Samurai Warriors, but with the Dragon Quest “overlay”. The authors of the popular Dynasty Warriors series came up with a way to attract fans of action games to the jRPG series. Has the series remained in good shape thanks to the sequel to the latter position?ĭragon Quest Heroes, released in October 2015, was the result of a collaboration between two large producers, Square Enix and Omega Force.
After many dry years, players who do not know Japanese have recently been able to lay their hands on excellent remakes of 3DS “five” and “eight”, and PS4 owners enjoyed surprisingly successful spin-offs – Builders and Heroes. Dragon Quest has returned to the West in a big way.
